Sustainable Waste Practices:
A Commitment to a Greener Future

All IT and data-bearing equipment, including computers, laptops, servers, monitors, printers, and network switches, is individually assessed for reuse, refurbishment, parts recovery, or recycling. Data is permanently erased beyond recovery through specialist partners or physically destroyed where required, with full documentation provided.

Working devices are prioritised for continued and valuable use through donations, resale, redistribution, or parts recovery. As such, we provide older iPhones and devices to students and charities where they can be used productively. We send the items or components unsuitable for reuse to authorised recycling partners, which include metals, plastics, and circuit boards. These items are recovered at the facilities through approved treatment processes to maximise landfill diversion.

White goods such as fridges, microwaves, kettles, and coffee machines are first checked for functionality and electrical safety.

Working appliances are reused wherever possible through resale, donation, redistribution, employee use, or reuse within our own office. For instance, when our own office fridge stopped working, we replaced it with a nearly new fridge collected during a clearance rather than letting a perfectly usable appliance go to waste.

Items unsuitable for reuse are dismantled through specialist treatment processes. Harmful gases are safely removed, while materials such as steel, copper, aluminium, glass, and plastics are separated and redirected into manufacturing supply chains for new products and components.

Furniture is assessed for structural condition and reuse potential before recycling is considered. We redirect the usable items through ways such as resale, donation, redistribution, or internal reuse. For example, furniture may be donated to churches, charities, businesses, and schools, depending on their suitability.

During a large-scale clearance by our team, we donated the furniture collected to The Eden School and shipped a considerable amount of the same through our partner, Kaa Trans Logistics, to less developed regions, such as Ghana, for continued use.

Some items find a second life in very practical ways. We resell suitable furniture through eBay, pass useful pieces on to university students or nearby businesses, and sometimes even help our own team members. For instance, we reused a high-quality sofa internally during a clearance project by giving it to a staff member who had recently moved into an unfurnished property and was in need of a sofa.

Cardboard and paper waste are separated during collection and sent directly into recycling balers. Compacting materials into dense bales improves transport efficiency and keeps the paper stream clean for processing.

We then transfer the baled material to our licensed recycling partners, where the recovered fibres are processed into new cardboard packaging and recycled paper products. This helps maximise landfill diversion.

By separating and managing these materials correctly from the start, we help reduce waste to landfill while supporting a more sustainable paper recycling cycle.

All wood waste is recycled through different treatment routes depending on its grade and condition. We have different authorised recycling partners that process the clean Grade A wood into products such as animal bedding, panel boards, and landscaping mulch.

We send lower-grade wood, like treated timber and seasonal tree waste such as discarded Christmas trees, to our specialist partner, Tree Specialist, where they are further processed.

These materials are shredded into wood chips and redirected for biomass energy recovery, helping divert wood waste from landfills while recovering value from materials that cannot be reused directly.

Batteries are separated by chemistry type, including UPS, lithium-ion, NiCad, and lead-acid, because different battery types require different handling and recycling processes. They are stored separately in secure containers to prevent leakage, overheating, fire risk, or chemical cross-contamination during storage and transport.

These waste streams are then sent to specialist recycling facilities, where materials such as lead, lithium, cobalt, nickel, and steel are recovered and reused in new battery and manufacturing supply chains.

Fire extinguishers are classified as hazardous or controlled waste under the UK waste regulations. There is a regulatory position statement (RPS) for the treatment of waste fire extinguishers before metal recovery. They require controlled handling due to their pressurised contents and chemical agents.

According to the regulations, stored or unused units may be recovered where suitable with a permit from the EPA (Environment Protection Agency), while all other extinguishers are sent to specialist recycling facilities.

We redirect the waste extinguishers collected during the clearance to our partner recycling facilities for appropriate treatment. The pressure is safely discharged, chemical contents are treated appropriately, and metal cylinders are recovered.

Fluorescent tubes are fully recycled by our dedicated recycling partner through specialist treatment processes designed to safely recover hazardous and recyclable materials. Tubes are crushed within controlled environments at those high-specification facilities to prevent mercury release.

Glass, aluminium end caps, phosphor powder, and internal components are separated for recycling. Mercury is safely extracted through distillation and prevented from contaminating soil or water systems at the recycling facility. Every component is tracked through the materials recovery lifecycle to ensure the minimum landfill disposal.

Paint waste is managed through Transfrontier Shipments (TFS), allowing combustible paint materials to be diverted entirely from landfill for energy recovery. This process achieves a 100% landfill diversion rate, where unusable paint is sent to specialist Energy from Waste (EfW) facilities.

The paint is processed as an alternative fuel source to generate energy under regulated treatment conditions. This reduces landfill disposal while ensuring hazardous substances are handled under controlled environmental conditions.
